This book presents the general theory of algebras of operators on a Hilbert space, and the modules over such algebras. The new theory of operator spaces is presented early on and the text assembles the basic concepts, theory, and methodologies. A major trend in modern mathematics, inspired largely by physics, is toward ‘noncommutative’ or ‘quantized’ phenomena. The first chapter by Professor Dales introduces the general theory of Banach algebras, which serves as a background to the remaining material. Dr Willis then studies a centrally important Banach algebra, the group algebra of a locally compact by:

A Banach *-algebra A is a Banach algebra over the field of complex numbers, together with a map *: A → A, called involution, that has the following properties: (x + y)* = x* + y* for all x, y in A.() ∗ = ¯ ∗ for every λ in C and every x in A; here, ¯ denotes the complex conjugate of λ.(xy)* = y* x* for all x, y in A.(x*)* = x for all x in other words, a Banach *-algebra is a.

Spectral theory is introduced in chapter 1, with a definition of Banach algebras immediately given on the first page. There are many advantages is presenting spectral theory in this general context, and the author illustrates these advantages throughout the chapter. Accordingly it is a pleasure to return to commutative Banach algebras in the context of Eberhard Kaniuth’s book, A Course in Commutative Banach Algebras, the book under review. Its lay-out already conveys the author’s good (and effective) conception of how his material should be presented: he packs the meat of the subject, Gelfand theory.

The core are chapters on Gelfand's theory, regularity and spectral synthesis. If A A is a Banach space, the internal hom hom (A, A) hom(A, A) is a unital Banach algebra (by general abstract nonsense). Any C * C^*-algebra (and thus every von Neumann algebra) is in particular a Banach algebra.
